Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday, May 6, and while there will be 50 different titles to choose from at participating comic shops, these are the ones that take a walk on the darker side.
Buffy the High School Years and Plants vs. Zombies
This 2017 all-ages offering from Dark Horse Comics features a sixteen-year-old Buffy the Vampire Slayer who is still learning her trade, and sometimes battles with demons and bad luck can erode a girls confidence – and her ability to have high-school fun. #SlayerStruggleIsReal. Â Then, your favorite plants and zombies will take a time-traveling journey to the past, where they run into a devious sheriff. Â If they have to work together to rise to the sheriff’s challenges, can they do it? It’s Plants vs. Zombies vs. Sheriff tarnation.
Lady Mechanika
This Free Comic Book Day special includes the original 14-page one-shot introducing Joe Benitez’s Lady Mechanika, a young woman in Victorian England with mechanical limbs and no memory of how she got them, searching desperately for the secrets to her past, plus excerpts from the Lady Mechanika trades and comics. Â This is sure to be a favorite with fans of the steampunk genre.
Monster High
It’s time for a school competition, and all of the ghoulfriends are excited about showing off their talents! But Clawdeen finds it challenging and runs away! Can her friends find Clawdeen and help her out? And who will win the competition?
Riverdale
In this special commemorative one-shot issue based on the hit CW TV series Riverdale, you’ll learn the secrets and stories from the summer before the series began. Inspired by a Ukrainian photojournalist who took secret motorcycle journeys through the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Spill Night tell the story of the Po-town Spill and things are getting weird. Â Strange lights fill the sky, the house across the street is melting, and the neighbors are turning into meat puppets. Â Lexa’s big sister and parents are gone, and all she has for company in this calamity is her rag doll, Vespertine. Â Luckily, since the Spill began Vespertine can talk, and she has plenty to say.
Descendents
This Free Comic Book Day release features the first chapter of the manga adaptation of the hit Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants. Â Disney Descendants tells the story of Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay, the children of some of Disney’s most notorious villains (Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella DeVille, and Jafar). When they’re invited to attend an elite academy to learn to be good, the kids come up with an ulterior motive – steal the fairy god mother’s wand and free their parents.
Free Comic Book Day is an annual event founded on the belief that for every person out there, there’s a comic book that they’ll love.
