John Carpenter is officially giving fans the closest thing to a new cinematic experience since 2010. On Tuesday, the legendary filmmaker and composer announced that his highly anticipated companion album for his upcoming graphic novel, “Cathedral,” will arrive on August 7, 2026, via Sacred Bones Records. The album drops just days after the graphic novel’s August 4 release, and the news arrives with the first single, “Lord of the Underground.”
Designed as a fully immersive project, Cathedral functions as both a soundtrack and a narrative engine. Each musical track aligns with a chapter of the graphic novel and features liner notes to guide listeners through the story.
The project was sparked by a vividly cinematic dream Carpenter had in 2024. “It was so cinematic and vivid,” Carpenter says. “I thought, ‘I have to score this.’ It’s kind of our first heavy metal album.”
To bring this aggressive new sound to life, Carpenter teamed up with longtime collaborators and bandmates, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.
“The story informed everything,” says Davies. “John would describe a scene and say, ‘We need a heavy riff here.’ We didn’t set out to make a metal record, but it evolved that way.”
While the trio leans into a heavier, more aggressive palette, the music doesn’t lose the tension and atmosphere that define Carpenter’s iconic sound. Furthermore, Carpenter emphasizes that the music is built to stand completely on its own.
“In other words,” Carpenter adds, “put this thing on and imagine you’re watching a movie. That’s what we want you to do.”
As for the story itself, “Cathedral” centers on an abandoned church in downtown Los Angeles that shifts from a forgotten building to a waking nightmare. After the brutal killing of a police officer draws attention to the long-ignored cathedral, Lieutenant Christine Marks and detectives Paul Hernandez and Steve Mayfield are pulled into an investigation that leads them deep into its catacombs—and toward a centuries-old evil imprisoned within.
Fans can get a sneak peek at this nightmare today; the release of “Lord of the Underground” is accompanied by a new visualizer featuring animated versions of the book’s illustrations.
For the graphic novel, Carpenter collaborated with his wife and longtime creative partner, producer and editor Sandy King, along with writer Sean Sobczak, illustrators Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna, colorist Sian Mandrake, and letterer Marshall Dillon.
“Cathedral” will be available on August 4 in bookstores, online, and from Storm King Comics, and on August 5 in local comic shops. “Lord of the Underground” is available to stream now, wherever you listen to music.
