Painted Black Games and Silver Lining Interactive have announced that the pixel-art, cozy horror game The Road of Dust and Sorrow will officially launch Dec. 3.
The release date reveal comes as the narrative survival-horror game surpassed 150,000 Steam wishlists. To mark the milestone, a story trailer debuted during this month’s Convergence Showcase, giving players a deeper look at the main characters, Katherine and Ava.
“Crossing 150,000 wishlists is completely overwhelming,” says Roman, Developer at Painted Black Games. “We set out to build a game that felt close to our hearts. Seeing so many players connect with Katherine and Ava’s journey shows us that there’s a real hunger for stories that represent deeply human experiences.”
Blending mid-1990s survival-horror mechanics with emotional storytelling, The Road of Dust and Sorrow takes place in the aftermath of a failed experiment—an intended cure for famine that instead spawned the “Dusters,” feral creatures driven by an unending hunger.
Players control Katherine as she navigates a ruined world to secure a future for her daughter, Ava. Their journey draws the attention of a sinister Preacher leading a mysterious cult driven by an ancient hunger. Rather than relying on mindless carnage, the game emphasizes story-driven survival, forcing players to weigh necessity against cruelty to protect what remains.
The Road of Dust and Sorrow launches Dec. 3 on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
