Kiernan Shipka’s Sabrina Spellman Is Headed to ‘Riverdale’

Netflix’s “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” ended last December with the series’ fourth season, but the show’s lead Kiernan Shipka and her character Sabrina Spellman are making a return in The CW’s “Riverdale.”

Shipka took to Instagram on Thursday to unveil the news, posting a picture from the set of Riverdale with the caption, “from Greendale to Riverdale. See u in Season 6.”

While this is exciting news for both “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” fans, it does come with some questions, SPOILERS AHEAD. First, the teenage witch met her demise at the end of the Netflix series, so how does she come to be in “Riverdale?” And does her appearance come before, or after the events of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina?”. Second, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is being continued in comic book form via the new series “The Occult World of Sabrina,” which picks up where the show left off. The comic book series’ first story arc “A World Without Sabrina,” suggests that at least in the beginning Sabrina is still deceased. So will the comic book story arc somehow tie into Sabrina’s appearance in “Riverdale?”

According to “Entertainment Weekly,” Sabrina will arrive on “Riverdale” in the fourth episode of season six of the series, titled “The Witching Hour(s).”

In it, Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) is performing a dangerous spell, one that may mean the difference between life and death for a beloved member of the Blossom family, and gets a much-needed assist from Spellman.

“Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” are of course part of the same universe, birthed by “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” comic book creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The shows saw minor crossover elements during the four-part run of the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” Netflix series, but never anything this significant. “Riverdale” concluded its fifth season on The CW last Wednesday.
