Macabre Spirits, the horror-centric brand from actor Matthew Lillard’s Find Familiar Spirits, is brewing a new terror for Día de los Muertos: Sangre de Agave, a limited-edition agave craft spirit paired with a bilingual tale of terror.
The release marks the brand’s first bilingual offering. Each box set features a short story by Bram Stoker Award-nominated Mexican-American author V. Castro presented in both English and Spanish, accompanied by two distinct cover illustrations by Los Angeles artist RAH Azul.
“I’ve always been drawn to the culture, tradition, and sense of community that surrounds agave spirits,” said Lillard, co-founder and co-CEO of Find Familiar, “but we didn’t want to craft our own until we felt we could approach it with the respect it deserves—both in what’s in the bottle and in the story we’re telling.
Sangre de Agave is our tribute to Día de los Muertos, created in partnership with Mexican and Mexican-American artisans, farmers, and storytellers who are deeply connected to these traditions. We’re incredibly proud of what we made together, and we hope it feels worthy of the culture that inspired it.”
Rooted in a deep respect for the earth and centuries-old Mexican distillation traditions, Sangre de Agave is a true craft spirit made in partnership with a family of Mexican agave farmers. It begins with small-batch Mexican agave, slow-cooked and crushed to unlock naturally rich, caramelized flavors, then distilled with spring-fed water.
This low-tech, traditional process yields a crystal-clear spirit that retains the earth’s natural flavors. The final offering boasts a complex, earthy profile with far richer depth than a standard tequila blanco, featuring roasted agave, green herbs, and white pepper on the nose, lime peel and vanilla on the palate, and a long, sweet finish.
Castro’s accompanying story, “Diosa y Tzitzimitl,” weaves a lyrical tale centered on Mayahuel, an ancient deity and protector of the agave who answers wronged souls on Día de los Muertos—only to find herself ensnared by an unexpected summoner.
Visual artist RAH Azul created a two-part original painting split across the English and Spanish covers, illustrating the theme of Día de los Muertos as a mystical balance between life and death, light and darkness, and good and evil.
Sangre de Agave is now available in limited quantities, exclusively at FindFamiliarSpirits.com, for $99.99.
