The Stranger Stays Horror-Themed Cabins Are Up For Sale

The Byers' living room recreated in the Demos Den cabin from Stranger Stays

In October of 2021, two very unique cabins opened for bookings on Airbnb. Located in Big Bear Lake, and known on social media as Stranger Stays, the pair of cabins are a first of their kind horror-themed cabin experience, complete with life-size props, horror-inspired murals, and more. Since they opened, they’ve booked up every weekend, and now they could be yours.

Each unit is uniquely themed; the “Demos Den” is inspired by the Netflix series “Stranger Things” and features a recreation of the Byers’ living room and a life-size Demogorgon. The “Creepshow Inn” is an 80s horror-themed cabin with a splash of 90s that features everything from a “Creature from the Black Lagoon” bedroom mural to a Freddy Krueger-themed fridge.

Despite the popularity of the vacation rentals, co-owner Jade Valore and her husband have decided to sell the properties due to local regulations that limit them to renting out only one unit at a time.

“This was created as a destination for people to enjoy and if the city can’t let us see our vision through then we would rather part ways,” said Valore in an interview with Nexstar.

The listing price for the cabins, which are a duplex property of two detached units, is $450,000. In addition to the retro flooring and wallpaper, each unit has been upgraded with new kitchens, bathrooms, HVAC units, a new concrete driveway, etc. Unfortunately, the horror-themed furnishings and decor aren’t included in the list price, but Valore says for the right offer, they’d be willing to consider it. You can see more images of the cabins and get all the details via the property listing.

If you don’t want to buy but are still interested in staying at this unique vacation rental, you can still do so. Stranger Stays is currently accepting bookings for April and is considering bookings in May. If they do open in May, Valore says they’ll notify their email contacts first before publicly announcing booking availability on social media. Those interested can subscribe to their newsletter at strangerstays.com.

Valore has plenty more themed fun to keep her busy despite the setbacks with this current venture. She says she would love to invest in a hotel in the future and revamp it entirely into themed rooms. But in the meantime, she is the owner of Rad Coffee, a horror-themed coffee shop with locations in Upland and Covina, and is currently working on a 90s-themed retail store, which is set to open this Spring.

Called Nitty n Gritty, the new retail location will be located next to the Rad Coffee location in Upland and is described as “Claire’s on acid.” The store’s look and feel share similar inspiration to the rental cabins and will feature quarterly installations and themed merch, all with 90s themes.
