Hand-painted Coraline Pop! figure

LAIKA, the stop-motion animation studio behind the 2009 film Coraline has teamed up with Hot Topic and Fan Factory to host a design contest in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the film.

To participate artists can submit an original piece of art inspired by LAIKA’s Coraline using characters, backgrounds and story elements from the film. Submissions are open now through March 20, 2019, and the grand prize includes $2,000 and a hand-painted Coraline Funko Pop! painted by Ann Whim Tseng, one of LAIKA’s puppet painters.

As a bonus, if an artists design is selected to be used as part of LAIKA’s licensed products the studio will create a separate agreement with the artist, independent of the design contest.

Judging of the contest will begin on March 21, 2019 with Brad Schiff and Phil Brotherton from LAIKA and Demitri Navarro from Hot Topic judging.

Brad Schiff is the Animation Supervisor for LAIKA’s upcoming film Missing Link as well as the studio’s Oscar®-nominated Kubo and the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, and ParaNorman. Previously, Schiff worked on Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride.

Phil Brotherton has served in the Art Department for all five of LAIKA’s films, sharing Art Director credits on Coraline and ParaNorman. Phil now works as part of the studios’ marketing team.

Demitri Navarro is the Assistant Buyer of Home, Papergoods, Games and Plush for Hot Topic and has worked for the company for nearly 10 years.
