2019 Is Going to Be A Big Year for Five Nights at Freddy’s Fans

The Five Nights at Freddy's animatronics

If you’re a fan of the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” games then a recent update from series creator Scott Cawthon has a lot of news worth getting excited about. In an updated post on Steam, Cawthon outlined details on the progress of a number of projects he had first announced back in August, including the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie, VR, AR, console ports and more. While many of the projects are still in their early stages, Cawthon said that “most of them will arrive in 2019.”

The Original Five Nights at Freddy’s Games Are Getting New, Improved, HD Console Ports

Though the console ports were originally announced in an update from Cawthon back in August, more details have been revealed about the project. According to Cawthon’s update, new, improved, HD ports of all the original games are being developed in partnership with Clickteam and will be released not only on consoles like XBox, Playstation, and Nintendo Switch, but also Android and iOS.

Other Five Nights at Freddy’s Games

In addition to the console ports, Cawthon gave updates on other “Five Nights at Freddy’s game projects including “Five Nights at Freddy’s VR,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s AR,” and two other brand new games.

Of all the game updates provided, “Five Nights at Freddy’s VR” is probably the furthest along at about 40% completion. In development with a company called Steel Wool, the game will feature, among other things, the up-close animatronic repair element experienced in “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location,” but in a VR environment. Cawthon said the VR game is so crazy that he refused to test it the first time and instead made his son test it instead.

Beyond this details were limited on other games beyond:

  • “Five Nights at Freddy’s AR” is about 10% complete
  • A game called “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into Madness” is the next game Cawthon hopes to work on and it would be a free game in the vein of Update 2.
  • A AAA game deal is currently in the works, which means fans may see a big-budget “Five Nights at Freddy’s game in the future

A New Five Nights at Freddy’s Book Series

In addition to new games, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is getting a new series of books from Scholastic. The new books will take a different angle than the original book series and will be a collection of short horror stories that take place in the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” universe. The books will feature unique characters and plotlines, but in some instances may have direct connections to the games. The series will launch with five books, each containing three different short stores.

The “Five Nights at Freddy’s” Movie

Perhaps the biggest and most disappointing “Five Nights at Freddy’s” announcement was another delay of a film based on the series. In August, Cawthon had announced that the gist of story and script for a “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie was more or less complete. Though he said it needed work, he had announced that Jason Blum had read it and liked it and that it would be based around the events of the first “Five Nights at Freddy’s” game. Unfortunately, that script has since been scrapped.

“I had a script written; Jason liked it, and Chris Columbus liked it too, but I tossed it,” said Cawthon in the update. “I had a different idea for it, one that I liked better. I take responsibility for this delay; it’s my fault. It’s been a real challenge for everyone, including myself, to come up with a good screenplay for this. But I’m determined to find the right story. I’m sticking to what I’ve always said, either the right movie gets made or no movie gets made.”

Despite the delays, Cawthon feels that progress is being made and each iteration brings him closer to a final product that he wants. He did clarify in the update that the movie and any potential sequels will take place in a universe where only “Five Nights at Freddy’s” one through three exist. Anything released after three will not exist in the movie universe.
