Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!” will make its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on Friday, May 22, 2026, followed by its HBO linear debut on Saturday, May 23, at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Written, directed, and produced by Gyllenhaal, the film is a “Bonnie and Clyde” meets “Bride of Frankenstein” tale that follows a lonely “Frank” (Christian Bale) in 1930s Chicago who enlists groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman (Jessie Buckley), and The Bride is born. What follows is a wild, combustible romance that sparks a radical cultural movement, complete with murder and possession. Jake Gyllenhaal and Penélope Cruz also star.
An accessible version of the film featuring American Sign Language (ASL), performed by ASL Dubber Yamila Davis and directed by Rosa Lee Timm, who also directed “Sinners” and “Minecraft” with ASL for HBO Max, will also stream on HBO Max the same day.
Rounding out the creative team, The Bride! is produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman Keren, with Carla Raji, David Webb, and Courtney Kivowitz serving as executive producers.
The streaming release follows a mixed theatrical run in March. The film currently sits at a 57% critics score and a 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers and reviewers alike polarized over its eccentric, genre-bending creative direction.
