Brian Patrick Butler’s 2020 indie body-horror comedy, “Friend of the World,” is making its 4K debut with a free YouTube premiere on Aug. 15 at 1 p.m. PST.
The 4K release marks six years since the film debuted at the Oceanside International Film Festival in 2020. Produced by Charybdis Pictures and Gray Area Multimedia on a micro-budget of roughly $3,000, the 50-minute feature has previously been available on platforms like Tubi and Troma Now.

The 4K YouTube premiere coincides with the film’s sixth Anniversary, following its premiere at the Oceanside International Film Festival on August 15, 2020.
Set in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic global conflict, “Friend of the World” follows a young filmmaker who awakens inside a subterranean bunker. There, she encounters an eccentric, unhinged general who attempts to navigate her through the decaying ruins. Blending sci-fi paranoia, dark comedy, and grotesque body horror, the film leans heavily into an intentionally unconventional visual aesthetic to explore themes of isolation and fracturing reality.
Shot back in May 2017 primarily in the basement of San Diego’s century-old C Street Inn, the movie’s extreme spatial constraints helped forge its signature style—combining stark black-and-white cinematography with surreal practical effects.
The film stars Nick Young, Alexandra Slade, Michael C. Burgess, and Kathryn Schott.
“Friend of the World” will be presented in its entirety in 4K for free on Charybdis Pictures’ official YouTube channel starting Aug. 15.
