Dionous Games and developer X Interactive have announced “Inner Voice,” a first-person adventure that swaps jump-scares and combat for a heavy, atmospheric exploration of the human psyche. Built entirely by solo developer Nick Chronopoulos in Unreal Engine 5, the title promises a surreal journey through a world forged from memory and silence.
Players step into the role of Booker, a man haunted by the loss of his wife, Diana. Drawn into a realm where time and logic have seemingly dissolved, Booker has no allies and no weapons—only the echo of a mysterious voice to guide him through the decay, and piece together the truth buried within this fractured world.
The gameplay focuses on scouring expansive, Victorian-Western environments. These spaces aren’t just backdrops; they are repositories for Booker’s fractured memories, where every corner turned and every narrative-driven puzzle solved serves as a gateway to deeper lore. By weaving these challenges directly into the story, the game ensures that every breakthrough reveals a new fragment of the past, all brought to life through full voice acting and a somber, original score that reinforces the isolation of Booker’s journey.
“‘Inner Voice’ was built around the idea that environments can carry emotion and memory,” says Chronopoulos. “I wanted players to feel the story through the spaces they explore, the sounds they hear, and the choices they make.”
Inner Voice draws inspiration from narrative-driven and atmospheric experiences such as “Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs,” “Dear Esther,” and the emotionally charged atmosphere of “Silent Hill,” blending mood, environmental storytelling, and introspection.
Inner Voice is currently in development for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), with planned releases on PlayStation 5 and Xbox at a later date.
A Steam demo is available now, so players can get a little taste of what’s to come.
