Netflix has unveiled the first teaser for “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story,” bringing Ryan Murphy’s true-crime anthology into 19th-century New England for its first female subject, following previous subjects Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers, and Ed Gein.
Premiering Sept. 17, the fourth season stars Ella Beatty (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”) as Lizzie Borden, the infamous Massachusetts woman tried and acquitted in 1892 for the gruesome axe murders of her father and stepmother.
The upcoming season takes some creative liberties with the historical record, centering around a repressed daughter trapped in a cruel home alongside a rebellious maid, played by Vicky Krieps (“Phantom Thread”). The duo escapes into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge before the unsolved double murder shocks the nation, giving birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free.
The ensemble cast includes Charlie Hunnam (“Monster: The Ed Gein Story”), Rebecca Hall (“Christine”), Billie Lourd (“American Horror Story”), and Jessica Barden (“The End of the F***ing World”).
