In celebration of the growing awareness and effort behind video game preservation, and GOG’s game preservation program, GOG is giving away the original “Alone in the Dark” trilogy—the foundation of the survival horror genre. Players can claim the trilogy for free on GOG through February 5, 2026, at 6 a.m. PT.

Since 2024, the GOG efforts have made massive strides in keeping classic gaming alive:

  • 267 Games added to the Preservation Program.
  • 1,461 Improvements made, including stability fixes and restored content.
  • 312 Community Picks added via the GOG Dreamlist in 2025 alone.

The program has recently rescued legendary titles that were previously unplayable on modern systems, including “Dino Crisis” 1 & 2, “Resident Evil HD Remaster,” “Devil May Cry HD Collection,” and “Cold Fear.”

“Game preservation doesn’t happen by accident,” GOG stated, noting that their work has evolved from a community idea into an industry-leading effort. This commitment has earned them a seat on the EFGAMP board and a dedicated game preservation panel at the upcoming GDC 2026.

For those who want to support this work more directly, GOG has launched GOG Patrons as a way to help sustain and grow preservation efforts.
