Inspired by the Slasher Trash Facebook Community, founded in 2017 by Gareth Morgan and boasting nearly 200,000 followers, the “Slasher Trash” documentary offers a deep dive into the slasher film genre of the late 1970s and 1980s. Written and directed by Michael Gingold, the film features over four hours of content and includes everything from no-budget backyard productions to enduring cult favorites, celebrating their over-the-top villains, fearless storytelling, and unending gore.
Die-hard fans and even mainstream audiences know “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th” and the like, but there’s a whole subculture of more obscure, low- (and no-) budget flicks, made with grab-a-camera enthusiasm and no concessions to good taste, dwelling beneath them. Featuring clips and commentary from the film’s creators, contemporary filmmakers, and experts in the field, “Slasher Trash” will introduce viewers to cult favorites, hidden gems, and the niche and obscure films you’ve never heard of.
