Peacock has announced that two-time Emmy Award winning actress Julie Bowen (“Modern Family”) will star in the new coming-of-age thriller, Hysteria!, set in the 1980s at the height of the Satanic Panic.

The drama series will explore America’s dark history of mass hysteria through the shocking story of the teenage Satanic Panic. “Hysteria!” follows a group of high school misfits who, after a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the late 1980s, exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band. But then, a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

Bowen will play the role of Linda Campbell, the mother of one of the teenage outcasts. Linda experiences a series of supernatural disturbances that force her to question everything she knows about her son and the growing threat of Satanism in their small Midwestern town.

The series will be produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, with Matthew Scott Kane (“Stitchers”) serving as writer and executive producer. John Francis Daley (“Dungeons & Dragons”), Jonathan Goldstein (“Dungeons & Dragons”), Chris Bender (“My Spy”), and Jake Weiner (“My Spy”) will also executive produce. Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“The Kings of Summer,” “Kong: Skull Island”) is set to direct the first episode.
