Netflix has officially revealed that its sci-fi series “The Boroughs” will arrive on May 21, 2026. Alongside the date, the streamer shared a batch of first-look images featuring the series’s cast of heavy hitters.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”), the eight-episode season is set in a seemingly idyllic New Mexico retirement community. The story follows a grieving newcomer whose monstrous encounter forces him to team up with a group of unlikely local heroes. Together, they uncover a secret proving that their “golden years” are far more dangerous and more formidable than anyone expects.
The series leans heavily on veteran talent, featuring a cast that includes Alfred Molina (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”), Geena Davis (“Thelma & Louise”), Alfre Woodard (“Clemency”), Denis O’Hare (“American Horror Story”), Clarke Peters (“The Wire”), and Bill Pullman (“The Sinner”).
The Duffer Brothers noted that while the show shares the adventurous, emotional spirit of “Stranger Things,” it draws thematic inspiration from the 1985 classic “Cocoon.” Per the producers, the series avoids treating aging as a punchline, opting instead to treat its characters as “real people facing real challenges… along with a few supernatural ones.”
