‘Rocky Horror’ Documentary ‘Strange Journey,’ Featuring Tim Curry & Susan Sarandon, Sets June Release Date

“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror,” the inspiring documentary from Linus O’Brien—son of Rocky Horror creator Richard O’Brien—has officially locked in its North American release.

Following an acclaimed festival run, the documentary will debut on digital platforms to rent or own on June 2, 2026, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

The film takes audiences on a five-decade deep dive into the phenomenon. Led by Linus O’Brien, who grew up alongside the community that has kept the fandom alive for fifty years, “Strange Journey” tracks “Rocky Horror” from its humble origins as a London fringe theater play to its meteoric rise, fall, and ultimate resurrection as the biggest cult film of all time.

Billed as the definitive story of the franchise, the documentary features brand-new, in-depth interviews with original creatives and cast members, including Richard O’Brien, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick, as well as stars who grew up in the glow of the “Rocky Horror” fandom, like Trixie Mattel and Jack Black.

Beyond the star power, “Strange Journey” explores what makes the property so singular: its groundbreaking, transgressive themes, iconic performances, and the legendary soundtrack that took over pop culture. The film digs deep into how the cult phenomenon created the midnight screening tradition and, more importantly, established a safe haven for those who have ever felt different or marginalized.

“Speaking with fans and people whose lives were deeply affected by the film was both eye-opening and humbling,” said Linus O’Brien. “‘Rocky Horror’ is unique in the way it created communities and spaces for people to express themselves without judgment—to feel liberated in every way they choose and to find a home among others like them. This documentary is as much a celebration of them as it is of Rocky Horror itself. The fans have taken this piece of art and made it their own, giving it a life beyond what my dad or any of its original creators could have imagined.”

“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” made its world premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival and is currently sitting at 97% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
