‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Getting Video Game from the Makers of ‘Friday the 13th: The Game’

Gun Interactive, the developers behind “Friday the 13th: The Game,” have announced they are bringing another horror favorite to the video game world: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

The new asymmetrical horror experience was announced during The Game Awards pre-show and is based on the iconic 1974 film. Unlike most asymmetrical games, Gun is looking to turn the tables a bit with “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” noting that family is a big part of the horror at the heart of the film’s story.

“In The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the family is an important part of the story to tell,” says the game’s website. “How each member of the family works within the greater team, well that’s completely up to you. A deep metagame and progression system will give you the tools to pick your place at the family table.”

Working with “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” co-writer Kim Henkel, Gun is developing Slaughter family members both old and new to be a part of the game experience.

“We felt it was paramount to focus on the one key aspect that separates Texas from most any other horror franchise in existence,” says Gun Interactive Creative Director Ronnie Hobbs. “This is of course the Slaughter family itself. You see, Texas doesn’t feature a singular killer. Texas is different. Texas is all about family. The Cook, the Hitchhiker, and Leatherface all have specific jobs to do and roles to play. Without each other, the family simply couldn’t exist and operate efficiently for very long. So when it comes to creating a multiplayer horror experience based on this film, we knew the family dynamic had to be a top priority. How they interact, how they work together, and how they all have specific strengths and weaknesses would be the basis of the killer experience.”

For now, Gun has unveiled core Slaughter family characters The Cook, Hitchhiker, and Leatherface as some of the killers that will be a part of the game, with Leatherface being played by Kane Hodder, the fan-favorite Jason Voorhees actor who reprised his role as the hockey-masked killer for Gun’s “Friday the 13th: The Game.” Additional members of the Slaughter family have been developed for the game but will not be revealed until a later date.

While the film’s iconic killer Leatherface has appeared in video games like “Dead By Daylight,” “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” will be the first officially licensed game based on the film since 1983 when a game loosely based on the film was released for the Atari 2600 and let players take on the role of Leatherface to chase and kill victims while avoiding obstacles such as fences, wheelchairs, and cow skulls.
