Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards are out, and this year, genre films are represented in nearly every category. This year’s list features a heavy presence from the fantastical and the macabre, including Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” and horror standouts “Weapons” and “The Ugly Stepsister.”
Coogler’s 2025 supernatural thriller “Sinners” leads the pack with a record-breaking 16 nominations. The film made history this morning, earning nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Its star, Michael B. Jordan, also secured a Best Actor nomination for his dual portrayal of twin brothers Smoke and Stack.
Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of “Frankenstein” for Netflix also fared rather exceptionally well, racking up nine nominations, including Best Picture. Jacob Elordi, who brought a new sensitivity to the Monster, snagged a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Meanwhile, Yorgos Lanthimos’ psychological thriller Bugonia received four nominations. Along with a Best Picture nod, Emma Stone earned a spot in the Best Actress race—marking her seventh career nomination and making her the youngest woman to reach that milestone.
Rounding out the list are two of 2025’s most buzzed-about horror films, “Weapons” and “The Ugly Stepsister,” both of which received nominations. Amy Madigan earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her chilling turn as Gladys in “Weapons,” while the Norwegian film “The Ugly Stepsister” landed a well-deserved spot in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for the work of Thomas Foldberg and Anne Cathrine Sauerberg.
The 98th Oscars, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air live on ABC and stream on Hulu on Sunday, March 15, at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT. You can see the complete list of nominations below:
