Early last month, Steelkrill Studio unveiled Where Dolls Hang, a psychological survival horror game inspired by Mexico’s infamous Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Muñecas). On Thursday, the developer revealed a unique feature coming to the title: the ability for players to watch feature-length horror films directly inside the game world.
Unlike traditional survival horror experiences, Where Dolls Hang puts players in the shoes of a detective. To crack missing-person cases, players must examine bodies, collect clues, place evidence markers, and document crime scenes with an in-game camera—all while surviving the dangers lurking in the woods.
Blending folklore, exploration, and investigative gameplay, the title also offers a surreal meta-experience. While searching both the haunted forest and their safehouse, players can stumble upon working televisions and projectors that can play full public-domain horror films from beginning to end. Rather than short clips or hidden Easter eggs, these are complete movies that players can sit down and watch in real-time. Among the featured films is George A. Romero’s iconic 1968 classic “Night of the Living Dead,” with additional public-domain gems hidden throughout the world.
