Horror icon Bruce Campbell, beloved by millions as Ash Williams in the “Evil Dead” franchise, shared a personal health update on Monday. In a statement posted to social media, the 67-year-old actor revealed he has been diagnosed with a form of cancer that is treatable, but not curable.
Campbell addressed the news with his trademark wit, writing:
“Hi folks, these days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that – I’m having one of those. It’s also called a type of cancer that’s ‘treatable’ not ‘curable.’ I apologize if that’s a shock – it was to me too.”
The diagnosis will understandably shift Campbell’s professional schedule. The actor confirmed he will be canceling several upcoming convention appearances to focus on treatment.
Despite the news, Campbell remains optimistic about his creative projects. He expressed hope that he will be well enough this fall to tour with his new film, “Ernie & Emma,” which Campbell both directed and stars in.
Campbell first played Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic “The Evil Dead” and reprised the role in “Evil Dead II,” “Army of Darkness,” and the hit Starz television series “Ash vs Evil Dead.”
His upcoming film, “Ernie & Emma,” is a road-trip comedy following a widowed pearl salesman on a journey to scatter his wife’s ashes. The film explores themes of memory and processing grief—topics that feel especially poignant following Campbell’s announcement.
