Six years after his first attempt to bring the Universal Monsters to the brick world, fan designer Mason Betterly—known in the LEGO Ideas community as ‘SpectralBricks’—is finally seeing his dream become a reality.
Submitted in May 2025, Betterly’s latest concept hit the required 10,000 fan votes shortly after Halloween. Out of 75 submissions in the third 2025 LEGO Ideas Review, his set was one of three officially greenlit earlier this month and is now heading into product development.
Made up of approximately 2,250 bricks, Betterly’s concept centers on a sprawling, decrepit castle packed with iconic locations from golden-age horror. His proposed minifigure lineup features six horror legends: Count Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and The Phantom of the Opera.
Mikkel Holme, Director, Adult Engagement & LEGO Ideas, praised the project as “something very different” and “exciting” for LEGO Ideas, citing its striking grayscale palette, eerie atmosphere, and classic cinematic aesthetic.
Final pricing, release date, and official set adjustments remain under wraps for now, with LEGO expected to reveal more as development progresses.
Having tracked Betterly’s journey since 2020, seeing a dedicated fan’s vision come to fruition is a massive win—not just for him, but for classic horror lovers everywhere.
