Mountain Dew Channels ‘The Shining’ in Super Bowl Ad Teaser

Mountain Dew released what appears to be a teaser for their Super Bowl LIV ad this week and the 10-second spot recreates the iconic typewriter scene from Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Shining.”

But instead of “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” the person is repeatedly typing the words, “New MTN DEW Zero Sugar. As good as the original. Maybe even better?”

The ad comes to an abrupt halt when the typewriter drops down a line and reveals the date 2.2.2020, the date of this year’s Super Bowl, followed by the hashtag #MTNDEWZeroSugar, suggesting more will be revealed during the big game next month.

If Mountain Dew does go the horror route for the upcoming ad, it will be the second year in a row a brand has opted to use horror as a basis for their big game commercial. Last year Sarah Michelle Gellar returned to the genre for Olay’s horror-themed ad, “Killer Skin.”
