Three Macabre Musicals Returning to the Big Screen for Regal’s ‘Musical Mayhem’

Regal is bringing cinematic song and dance to the big screen this May with its “Musical Mayhem” series. While the lineup features musical staples like “Chicago” and “Grease,” horror fans can look forward to several dark cult classics set to return to theaters.

On May 13, Joel Schumacher’s 2004 production of “The Phantom of the Opera,” starring Gerard Butler as The Phantom, returns to theaters as part of “Stage to Screen” week. The film is the most recent cinematic take on the story of a young soprano who becomes the obsession of a disfigured, murderous musical genius living beneath the Paris Opéra House.

On May 29, the 2008 cult classic horror musical “Repo! The Genetic Opera” returns to screens. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (the visionary behind several “Saw” installments), the film is a gothic rock opera set in a dystopian 2056. It follows Shilo Wallace (Alexa PenaVega) as she uncovers the bloody truth about her father’s career as a “Repo Man”—a state-sanctioned assassin who forcibly reclaims organs from those behind on their payments.

Regal will close the month with the 1986 remake of “Little Shop of Horrors” on May 31. Directed by legendary puppeteer and filmmaker Frank Oz, the film stars Rick Moranis as Seymour Krelborn, a nerdy florist who finds his chance at success and romance with the help of a giant, man-eating plant with a thirst for human blood.

“Music has always been one of cinema’s most powerful storytelling tools—it’s what turns a great film into an unforgettable experience,” said Brooks LeBoeuf, Senior Vice President of US Content at Regal. “The Musical Mayhem series spotlights the most watchable and listenable movies across the history of cinema in our theatres where these big screen productions were meant to be seen and heard.”
