What happens when grief goes too far? That’s the haunting question at the center of “My Best Friend’s Dead,” the new horror-thriller from director Bruce Wemple (“The North Witch”), arriving on VOD and Digital on May 26, 2026, courtesy of Lionsgate.
Set in a remote New England town, the film stars Caitlin Duffy (“Good Trouble”) as a young woman who has closed herself off to the outside world following the tragic murder of her best friend (Anna Shields, “The North Witch”). When she tries to bring her soulmate back from the dead, the demon she’s created follows her into the real world and turns her quiet neighborhood into a terrifying hellscape.
Filmed in 2021, the project grew directly out of the isolation of the pandemic, and those themes are woven throughout. The film, written by Shields and based on an idea from Wemple, is described as “a wild and witty modern horror story about isolation, delusion, and the supernatural.”
“At its core, ‘My Best Friend’s Dead’ is a story about being trapped by your past, and all the demons you can’t let go of,” says Wemple. “The feeling of being stuck is universal, with or without a pandemic. And sometimes you have to dig deep within yourself to change things.”
It’s a sentiment that gives the film’s supernatural premise an unexpected emotional weight — and suggests there’s more going on here than your average horror offering.
