On Friday, Netflix marked its annual Stranger Things Day celebration with a major expansion of the “Stranger Things” universe, announcing a new live-action prequel series titled “Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure.”
Created by the Duffer Brothers and longtime franchise writer Kate Trefry, “Other Worlds” travels back to the 1950s—decades before the original series and predating the events of the stage play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” The series promises an entirely new setting, fresh heroes, and new monsters, with production slated for New Mexico.
Trefry, who also penned “The First Shadow,” serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Director Joe Wright (“Pride & Prejudice”) is set to direct the first three episodes and serve as executive producer.
Matt and Ross Duffer will executive produce through Upside Down Pictures alongside Shawn Levy and 21 Laps. Additional executive producers include Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling, and Pavlina Hatoupis.
“Other Worlds” marks the second television spinoff following the flagship series’ conclusion last year. It follows the animated series “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85,” which debuted on the streaming platform this past spring before returning for a second season this fall.
