A Kickstarter has been launched for a new ARPG called “The Horror,” which fuses the strategic depth of “Diablo II” with the terrifying atmosphere of VHS-era horror. The project is helmed by former Rockstar Games Technical Director and BAFTA winner Blair Renaud, who is collaborating with developer Titan1Studios and creative collaborator Lovina (known for “The Boys”) to bring this vision to life.
In “The Horror,” players step into a twisted world where supernatural forces and psychological dread collide. Instead of a traditional class, you play as a “Manifestation of Horror”โan embodiment of fear itselfโchoosing one of three core attributes. Choose Flesh to become a Physical Manifestation, channeling slasher icons like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. Embrace Mind to become a Psychological Manifestation, using dreams, fear, and psychic manipulation to torment your victims (think Pennywise, Freddy, or The Scarecrow). Or select Undead to channel walkers, stalkers, and other undead hordes.
Players will fight through corrupted, procedurally generated environments, confronting both human victims and true abominations. With each run, the levels evolve and mutate, ensuring no two experiences are ever the same. Combat is visceral and strategic, emphasizing timing, movement, and cursed loot to shape your unique embodiment of terror. The visual aesthetic is a gritty, VHS-inspired nightmareโa look that channels the grit of retro horror and the addictive loop of classic ARPGs.
As of this writing, the campaign had raised just over $10,000 of its $35,598 goal. The campaign runs through November 11, 2025, at 8 p.m. PT. Funds raised will significantly expand development by financing additional art, animation, and core programming systems to bring “The Horror” to its terrifying full potential.
The game offers several backer perks, ranging from having your name in the credits and receiving exclusive in-game items to being immortalized in-game with a tombstone, character, NPC, and more bearing your name.
