General Mills Celebrating 50th Anniversary of Cereal Monsters with ‘Monster Mash’ Cereal

It’s been eight years since General Mills has released all of five of their monster cereals together during the Halloween season. 2013 brought with it the return of Fruity Yummy Mummy and Fruit Brute cereals, but since then only the original trio of Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry have been available on store shelves at Halloween. However, a new image, which surfaced on Instacart, suggests the gang’s getting back together for a special 50th-anniversary cereal called “Monster Mash,” which is due to be released for Halloween 2021.

The monster cereals were first introduced in 1971 with the release of Count Chocula and Franken Berry, with Boo Berry joining the lineup in 1972. Fruit Brute followed in 1974, but would be discontinued in 1982 and later replaced by Yummy Mummy in 1988. Neither Fruit Brute or Yummy Mummy was released again until their resurrection in 2013. Now elements of all five cereals are coming together to make “Monster Mash” cereal, which combines berry flavored cereal pieces from the Boo Berry and Frankenberry cereals with the monster marshmallows from Fruit Brute, Count Chocula, and Fruity Yummy Mummy.

From the cereal listing:

After 50 years on the scene the monsters reuinte to mash. For the first time ever the monster are coming together in one scary delicious bowl of cereal! They did the mash the monster mash the world’s most monster group is back together for a limited-edition cereal, and to record their own version of the greatest monster anthem of all time.

Needless to say, in addition to the cereal, we’re going to get to hear the Cereal Monsters rendition of Bobby Boris Pickett’s “Monster Mash.” In fact, based on the listing, it sounds like you’ll be able to scan the box to hear it and “go behind the music.” The listing also mentions the website MonsterMashCereal.com, which isn’t live yet, but some sleuthing into the domain ownership shows that it’s currently parked on General Mills servers.

I usually get my first glimpse of the General Mills Monster Cereals on store shelves at the end of July, so if the new Monster Mash cereal follows past trends, we’re only a couple of months away from Monster Cereal fun!
