The General Mills Cereal Monsters Get ‘Behind the Music’ Style Video For Their ‘Monster Mash’ Remake

When it was announced earlier this year that the General Mills Cereal Monsters would be getting a special 50th-anniversary cereal called Monster Mash, early online listings also suggested the popular cereal icons would be releasing their own take on Bobby Borris Picket’s Halloween classic “Monster Mash.” Then, when the boxes of cereal, fruit snacks, and other 50th anniversary treats began hitting store shelves last month the specially marked boxes confirmed this and feature a special QR code that takes you to https://monstermashcereal.com/, but up until yesterday the website just read “Monster Mash Drops August 2021.” Now, General Mills has released an all-new behind the music video telling the story of the monster supergroup getting back together and released the monsters’ rendition of what they call, “the greatest monster anthem of all time.”

While the cereal monsters have never actually been a band, for the 50th anniversary General Mills has concocted a story about how the Cereal Monsters were part of a supergroup that broke up decades ago and have reunited to remake “Monster Mash” for their 50th anniversary. Their story is documented in a “Behind the Music” style video that features other cereal icons Lucky the Leprechaun and the Trix Rabbit as well as blink-182 drummer Travis Barker.

General Mills has made a big deal of the 50th anniversary of the cereal monsters. Not only with the above video and song release, but with the release of a number of 50th anniversary-themed food products including the Monster Mash cereal, Monster Mash fruit-flavored snacks, Monster Cereals trick or treat packs, Count Chocula mini treats, and retro packaging releases of Count Chocula, Franken Berry and Boo Berry cereals. But that’s apparently not all they have planned. In a blog post announcing the remake of the mash, General Mills ended their posts by saying, “Stay tuned for even more spooky-good surprises coming to stores this Halloween season.”

The Monster Cereals debuted in 1971 with the introduction of Count Chocula and Franken Berry. Boo Berry joined the monster crew a year later in 1972 and expanded nationally in the U.S. in 1973. The first three Monster Cereals have been in production ever since, now appearing just in time for Halloween. Frute Brute (formerly Fruit Brute) hit store shelves with the “howlin’-good taste of fruit” in 1974, but was discontinued in 1982. Fruity Yummy Mummy made his debut in 1988 with a similar fruity flavor to Frute Brute. But the cereal was only around until 1992. In 2013, both cereals returned and marked the first time all five Monster Cereals were available at the same time.
